From what to what? is there any reason to be happy and proud at this Independence day (another holiday for us to stock rum and beer, drink all night this night, wake late, see films, surf and roam in chat rooms, sleep, see more tv and the reality shows and soap operas and get out to the world of trafficjams, potholes, rain, famine, hunger, beggars and what not)....
I apologise for the pessimism that offlate dominates my posts, but isnt that true?
Independence.... apathy.... anarchy... violence... lack of vision...
What are we celeberating tomorrow?

The Indian GOLD!!!

Abhinav Bindra ( keep this name and face in mind folks... he is gonna be celebrated like hell now...) secured India's first individual gold medal in Olympic history today in the men's 10- meter air rifle shooting competition in Beijing today. The 25-year-old Bindra, the world champion in the event, won with a score of 596 ahead of defending champion Zhu Qinan of China and Finland's Henri Hakkinen.

India's previous eight (ya ,,,only eight so far.. and we have the elephant size contingent led by the likes of Suresh kalmadi who have gone there and the number of officials are far ahead of the actual participants, as usual...) Olympic gold medals came from its field hockey team, which this time failed to qualify for the Beijing Games ( thanks again to the likes of Gill who is an expert in manythings including scratching women at their back, but not hockey)and won individual silver and bronze medals in sprinting, hurdling, shooting, tennis and weightlifting (thanks to the efforts of individuals who scored, inspite of the Kalmadis, Pawars, Mukul wasniks and Lalit modi's.....

While we can be happy about Abhinav bindra, let us not celebrate before an introspection...

The second most populous nation, with so much of money spent for sports.. ( where does it go is another question which the SAI guys and the uncrowned kings who rule the Indian sports scene like their personal fiefdom, have to answer)why are we not maiking it big, when the small nations go home with all the gold and silver?

The rowing training centre in Trivandrum,(just an instance of how bad things are ,here) run by the Govt of Kerala, ministry of sports, aided by SAI money, makes its members practise ,sitting in a wodden log, with iron bars that RESEMBLE the actual oars... no boats ,no oars.. no water.. just assume that you have all this and practise..and the state sports minister wanted to go to China to encourage the team but alas, the central govt refused.. Not because they became pragmatic suddenly, but because everyone, almost every official, and retd/thrown out/rejected by the people politician who heads some sports federation or the other was already in Beijing to MOTIVATE THE TEAM...every Tom, Dick ,Harry and Jughead is there spending money from our coffers...

Now that he has done it ( congrats man!..one gold for one billion people..) wait and see how this young lad Abhinav is paraded around, with the politicians and the officials vying to be seen in the cameras, in a naked display of vanity, and tall claims like "we did it".."we told u.."...etc...
Shameless we are, but why the hell do we celebrate it???
