At Seena Taan Ke, an AIDS awareness function organised in Delhi on Sunday to benefit truckdrivers, Gere and Shetty spoke to the vulnerable community about the dangers and misconceptions of AIDS. Gere, wanted to drive home the point that HIV doesnt spread through kissing was bend on to make his point by kissing first Shilpa's hand, then hugging her, kissing her cheek, and finally bent over the surprised (????)....{ i doubt that going by the merry and laughter that the lady expressed...still}...actress to give her a big kiss, Hollywood-style.
Shetty was all in laughs' with' yeh thoda zyaada ho gaya' ('this was a bit much') .... and "I understand this is his culture, not ours. But this was not such a big thing or so obscene for people to overreact in such manner," she told the Press Trust of India news agency......
"I understand people's sentiments, but I don't want a foreigner to take bad memories from here," PTI quoted her as saying. The truckdrivers, but, didnt seem to have taking the show lying down as she did with the white mans attack....they seem to have protested and got a shock that instead of spreading AIDS awareness this two was promoting the recipe for it... Gere was even seen running behind even more voluptous Bipasha with the same offer but she refused to stand in that yoga pose for him to climb on her..... Religious fundamentalists ,reports Media....and Hindu nationalists consider any display of public affection taboo. It is all the worse when the pair in question are unmarried. And a further aggravating factor is that Gere is a non-Hindu foreigner.
The confusion for me here is that Gere would choose to continually, and emphatically, keep kissing the actress in a show of safety -- while neither of the two have HIV, to begin with...... If the point he was trying to make was that kissing do not spread HIV, he shud have gone down and kissed some one who already had the virus, not the actor who seemd to have discovered controversy.....well I dont want to say that Gere did something wrong... I even feel a bit (???) jealous that he could do it... and Im sure that most of the protesters here too are with the same feeling than the attack on the morals and values of this great nation.... but still.....
Wasnt it a bit too much??
